Free State police have called on motorists to be cautious and adhere to traffic regulations following a disruption on the N3 highway near Harrismith on Monday morning (11/11).

Authorities are working to maintain road safety as they monitor potential shutdown activities affecting major national roads.

Law enforcement officials have been stationed along both the N3 and N5 highways as part of a joint operation centre set up by the Thabo Mofutsanyana district. Officers began their patrols on Friday, providing around-the-clock surveillance to prevent and respond to any incidents.

‘Police intervened when a man attempted to obstruct traffic’

So far, no serious incidents have been reported, said Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele. But, early this morning, police intervened when a man (42) attempted to obstruct traffic on the N3 toward Van Reenen.

He displayed a banner to stop truck drivers. Officers quickly apprehended him, ensuring that traffic flow continued without interruption.

“We have increased our deployments and want to remind all drivers to remain vigilant, follow traffic regulations, and help maintain road safety,” said Makhele. “This cooperation is essential in preventing further disruptions.

“Since the announcement of the potential truck shutdown, police and traffic officers have actively assisted truck drivers with various roadside issues, including mechanical breakdowns and fuel shortages. These measures aim to minimise disruptions and ensure that stranded drivers receive necessary assistance.”

Police are still monitoring the situation, thus far without any incidents. Meanwhile, All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa says its shutdown will go ahead as planned today, despite ongoing talks with government officials to avert the strike.
