Northern Cape learners excel in provincial oral history competition─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 15:15 Tue, 06 Aug 2024

“These competitions ignited a flame of patriotism within me, building me into the social justice warrior I aspire to be.”
More than ten Northern Cape learners will take part in various categories of the annual national Oral History Heritage competition later this month.
The Northern Cape learners proved themselves and are excited to be heading to the finals, some competing for the third time and planning on bringing home another victory.
“The purpose of the oral history Programme is to uncover the untold stories in research projects, by composition of poems and short stories,” said the provincial education department. “Most importantly, this is to create platforms for all learners across various phases to express their own thoughts, feelings, and ideas on past and present historical events and incidents.”
The provincial competition took place on Friday (02/08) and Saturday (03/08) where learners from Grades 8 to 11 in each district participated, and 13 made it into the top positions of their respective categories.
Grade 10 learner from Kimberley Boys High School, Carter-Blyke McDillon, one of those selected for the national competition later this month, told OFM News the competition has sparked a new-found love.
“I entered the oral history competition in Grade 8, when I was approached by my educator to do a presentation. Though I was extremely unprepared, I made it through the levels, right up to nationals. Since that first national competition, I simply fell in love with research and oracy.”
“It’s the most incredible feeling to win in these competitions. As the research and speeches that we deliver, actually have an impact on society. Though I must admit, maintaining consistency in the department competitions can be extremely stressful, as the workload is almost as much as my school work.
“These competitions ignited a flame of patriotism within me, building me into the social justice warrior I aspire to be.”
The Northern Cape Department has celebrated every learner’s achievement thus far and is hopeful to bring home another trophy at the national competition.
