“According to a passenger (18), the driver jumped off the bus before it stopped after hitting a tree.”

Three learners from the Gaetsho Secondary and JM Lekgetha Combined Schools in Lichtenburg have been admitted to hospital and more than twenty were treated for light injuries after their scholar transport bus was involved in an accident.

The bus's steering wheel reportedly came off, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle carrying 51 learners.

North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi led a delegation to hospitals on Wednesday (7/2) where the learners were admitted, to offer her support and counselling. She is deeply saddened by the accident and called on the community to remain united and supportive in this difficult time, said spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.

OFM News has learned that some learners were discharged and will be monitored at home.

According to a passenger (18), the driver jumped off the bus before it stopped after hitting a tree, said Community Safety and Transport Management spokesperson, Lucas Mothebedi. The learner said it wasn’t the first time the driver failed to control the bus.

In December 2023, OFM News reported on the department’s verification process of appointed scholar transport to ensure compliance. Preliminary investigations by the Public Transport Directorate indicate the operator rented a bus during the verification process, said the Head of the Department, Dr Hans Kekana.

“The service provider would not have been given the contract if this was the bus that was inspected, and as per the service level agreement this contravention leaves us with no option but to terminate the operator’s contract.”

A learner from Gaetsho Secondary School remains under medical supervision at Bophelong Provincial Hospital in Mahikeng, while others are at the General De la Rey Hospital in Lichtenburg.

“We are working closely with the authorities to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure the implementation of necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in future,” said Motsumi.

Motsumi extended her gratitude to the Department of Health for their swift response.
