The provincial government said it remains on high alert for the coordination of all hazards, including veld fires, whilst the Northern Cape Umbrella Fire Protection Association continues to monitor and mobilise resources.

Psycho-social support has been offered by the Northern Cape Government following the tragic fire incident which resulted in the death of six members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The death of six soldiers came after strong winds spread fire extensively at the combat training centres in Lohatla and Gamagara. The entire camp, vehicles, shelter and personal belongings of 1,300 military personnel were destroyed by the fire. Other SANDF members who sustained injuries during the fire were transported to the hospital for medical care.
