Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana has appointed three HODs.
Dukwana’s predecessor, Sisi Ntombela, had set a deadline of October 2022 to fill these positions, however, the deadline was missed. The announcement of appointments was made on Wednesday (27/9). The three appointments are Dr Masego Tshabalala for the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport; Adv. Tumelo Phahlo for the Department of Social Development; and Steve Tshabalala for the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
Dr Masego Tshabalala was appointed as HOD of Community Safety, Roads and Transport. She has been working in the public sector, both national and provincial, for 27 years. She holds two Honours Degrees, an MBA, and a PhD in Business Management. Photo supplied
The provincial government’s Media Liaison Officer, Palesa Chubisi, said the government is content that all the appointed HODs have the necessary experience and capacity to execute their respective duties with distinction, and congratulates and wishes them well. “Government would also like to thank all the candidates who applied for the vacancies and wishes them well in their future endeavours.”
Adv. Tumelo Phahlo was appointed as the HOD of Social Development. He has 25 years of experience in the public sector. He has worked as a Director, Chief Director, and Acting Head of the Department since 2020. He holds a B Proc, LLB and was admitted as an advocate of the High Court in 2001. Photo: Facebook
The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation was previously led by Zola Thamae. Her reappointment as acting HOD was accused of being illegal. In an attempt to uncover if it is allowed for someone to act as a HOD for two consecutive terms, an enquiry was sent to the departmental spokesperson, Tankiso Zola. The department then appointed the former HOD of Cogta, Mokete Duma, to act.
Steve Tshabalala was appointed as HOD of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. He has 28 years of experience in the public sector. Holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management. Photo supplied
Previously, rumours surfaced that former MEC of Arts and Culture, Dan Khothule, has been appointed as the HOD. Chubisi then refuted these rumours and said an appointment is yet to be made.
