Inmate committed suicide at Mangaung Correctional Centre─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:47 Tue, 22 Aug 2023
An inmate has committed suicide at the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Correctional Centre under the guard of the British security company G4S.
The Department of Correctional Services' national spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, said the incident happened on Monday. He said the inmate was sentenced in 2013 for murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and family violence. He was at the Mangaung Correctional Centre since 2015.
The deceased managed to climb to the truss of the building and threw himself to the ground.
“The internal hospital treated him before being rushed to an outside hospital, but he passed away. The incident happened at about 08:59 and was reported to the SAPS. Other structures, such as JICS, will also be notified as per the appropriate procedure.”
The department has launched an investigation into his death.
The prison is where murder and rape convicted Thabo Bester escaped in May 2022. Bester escaped at G4S by using the charred body of Katlego Bereng as a decoy to escape prison.
12 people have been arrested in connection with his escape and ten are out on bail of R10 000 each.
