The Free State Government has recognised a phenomenal woman in Russia who is flying South Africa’s flag high as part of celebrating women throughout August.

In a statement posted on the Free State Government on Facebook, Maokeng-born star, Thandeka Queen Radebe, shared how she grew up idolising legendary musicians such as Brenda Fassie and Miriam Makeba, and immediately knew that music was her calling.

After being awarded a bursary to study Agricultural Sciences in Russia by the Free State government, not only did Radebe use the opportunity to excel academically, but her singing talent also caught the eye of the Russian people.

“I was born to sing! I was the lead singer at my creche and was teaching other children how to sing. I got the right notes from a very young age. I have been singing my whole life. Singing gives me a feeling of contentment and a feeling I can’t even put into words. I was very young when I realised that I was born to be a singer and it’s my calling.”

Radebe also shared her daunting experience which later led to her gaining desired recognition and awards in Russia.

“There is an annual arts festival of artists in Russia and only a few foreigners are allowed to participate, but I managed to get the chance to partake. It was very tough and I went through four rounds of auditions, but by God’s grace, I made it to the main stage. I received a trophy with a certificate and the honour to adjudicate their other functions.”

She also teaches English at the Moscow Innovative Language Centre and dabbles in television work. She completed her studies at the People’s Friendship University of Russia. She speaks Russian and toured with Kazakh-Azerbaijani rapper Jah Khalib.

“I am a qualified, professional live entertainer, and an ambassador of the African culture. I have travelled to countries like Moldova to represent my culture through music and dance. I have worked on Russian television as an English presenter.”

Radebe, who is also a mother, said she plans to enroll for a Master’s Degree in Food Processing.
