The Free State Department of Health has cautioned workers against participating in the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) strike, which is expected to continue today.

Despite being interdicted by the High Court, on Monday, 6 March 2023, members of Nehawu continued with planned protests across the country.

The provincial secretary of Nehawu, Khauhelo Mnqibisa, told OFM News that they are continuing with the protest as they appealed the interdict in demand of the 10% wage increase as compared to the 3% offered by government.

The spokesperson for the Free State Health Department, Mondli Mvambi, expressed concerns over disruptions caused by protesters at some facilities across the province, which also affected access to some major hospitals.

He said health workers who participate in a strike during working hours will be charged with misconduct, and the department will be strict with the "no work, no pay" principle, which will be applied promptly without fear or favor.

OFM News previously reported that four members of the union were arrested at Pelonomi Hospital after Nehawu members barricaded the entry points of the facility with burning tyres and stones. Despite blocking entry at the health facility, Mnqibisa insisted their protest march is peaceful and stated that the union contacted its lawyers to deal with the issue of members who were arrested.

Mvambi says the Fezi Ngubentombi Hospital in Sasolburg was also barricaded; however, things returned to normal in the afternoon. Union members dispersed as soon as police arrived at Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad.

According to him, there were also initial disruptions at Bongani Hospital in Welkom, characterised by barricading of entry points and intimidation of staff. The police were engaged, and things went back to normal.

Patients at the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa left the hospital as they were not getting any assistance. No-one has communicated any arrangements with them.

Mvambi said the department respects the rights of union members to strike, however, it should be done lawfully and not infringe on the constitutional rights of others. He has condemned any form of violence and intimidation directed at health workers, patients and infrastructure.
