South African rapper AKA shot dead─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 10:55 Sat, 11 Feb 2023
South African rapper and hip-hop star, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, also known as AKA, was shot dead in Durban on the evening of Friday 10 February 2023.
Forbes lost his life at the age of 35.
A statement from his family confirming his passing, explains that they are still waiting for details surrounding the star’s death, which are yet to be communicated by the police in Durban.
His parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes expressed their sadness. “To us, he was our son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend and most importantly, a father to his beloved daughter, Kairo.”
He is described as someone who was loved and also gave love in return. His family asked for compassion and space during this time.
The police in Durban are yet to release a statement about the incident.
In the meantime, spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said he cannot confirm who the person was that was also shot dead, as they are not sure what the nature of his and AKA’s relationship was.
He added that they were shot at a close range.
“We are not sure if he was a friend, bodyguard, manager or someone who was just walking with AKA. We found two lifeless bodies at the crime scene.”
A paramedic who attended to the scene, Garrith Jamieson, explained that the star was declared dead on the scene and efforts to save the other person were also futile.
Fans of the star, including the newly appointed ANC’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, took to social media to offer condolences.
Mbalula’s tweeted a broken heart after the star’s stage name, AKA.
Most of the fans have quoted a line from one of his songs, Jika: “Any day this life gon' flash before your eyes”. This is while some fans have expressed their fear of living in the country as they feel it is getting more dangerous by the day.

Forbes won multiple awards, including the 18th South African Music Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, BET Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, Namibia Annual Music Awards 2019 and his recent - MTV Africa Music Awards 2021.
