The Matjhabeng Local Municipality continues to beef up security as part of its efforts to deal with issues of vandalism of infrastructure.
During an interview with the OFM News team, Matjhabeng Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, explained that the infrastructure in Matjhabeng was destroyed by zama-zamas and others who referred to themselves as business people. This is one of the situations that led to sewerage challenges. He says that the municipality came up with a plan to beef up security as the infrastructure project that will address sewerage challenges, will commence on 25 January 2023.01

“If we don’t have a very strong security plan, after twelve months will have the same challenges. So with the municipal manager, we have already appointed 150 security [officers] but we are also going to appoint about 22 people to what we call a specialised unit. That specialised unit is going to focus on serious crime. Serious crime and sabotage, because if you [commit a crime related to] electricity you are sabotaging the economy. So, you need to be charged with sabotage,” he added.
Khalipha further said he is positive that the security measures that they have put in place, together with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, will help them curb the issue of vandalism.
