MEC calls for harsh sentences for Maselspoort pool-attack suspects─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:33 Thu, 29 Dec 2022
The MEC for Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Desta) has called on law enforcement agencies to impose harsh sentences on perpetrators who allegedly attacked two boys at Maselspoort Resort on Christmas Day.
Two of the three suspects were released on warning after appearing in court yesterday. The third suspect, facing an attempted murder charge, was set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning.
In his statement, MEC Makalo Mohale applauded the police for acting swiftly despite the release of two suspects.
He said he was delighted that the other suspect charged with attempted murder would have spent a night in jail before appearing in court.
Mohale has since called on the court to give the suspects harsh sentences to deter others from committing similar offences.

Mohale previously said he would meet with the holiday resort management to gather all the facts. He strongly condemned “senseless acts of racism”, adding that such behaviour should never be tolerated.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) in Mangaung said they view the incident as “unfortunate” and deserving of “unambiguous condemnation”.
Provincial police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, said after the police had obtained statements from people at the resort, the docket was presented to the senior state prosecutor who gave a directive that the charge could be changed to attempted murder, given the additional facts.
