F4SD approaches HRC over service delivery in Matjhabeng─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:59 Wed, 19 Oct 2022
The troubled Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State has once again come under scrutiny over issues of service delivery.
This comes after the decision by the Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) to approach the South African Human Rights Commission to intervene in the municipality which they claim has failed to clear sewage spillages that have subjected residents to horrible smells and other hazards. The national organiser of the F4SD, Thebe Ntsane, says the Matjhabeng Municipality is inundated with reports of blocked or leaking sewerage pipes, mainly in Ward 26 at Moshongoville, Thabong, in Welkom. However, none of them has been fixed so far. The F4SD states that one of the affected residents is an 89-year-old woman who said the unbearable stench has now found its way into her house.
Ntsane also said that they were requested by residents to intervene as a movement but so far their efforts to get answers have hit a brick wall, as the municipality keeps ducking and diving them.
“We will not let this matter slide because we are service delivery activists. Our people’s lives are in danger and this is why we have lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission to deal with the case appropriately. There is no leadership at this municipality and this should be a red flag,” adds Ntsane.
Ntsane further said on 14 October 2022, the F4SD went to Matjhabeng to get answers but instead they were sent from pillar to post and no one could account for why the matter hasn’t been resolved till this day.
OFM News is awaiting answers from the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
