Public invited to “know” Northern Cape Legislature─── 07:00 Sun, 11 Sep 2022
In celebration of Tourism Month, the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature this week (12 – 16 September 2022) hosts a series of events to encourage the public to know more about the institution and its iconic building situated in Galeshewe, Kimberley.
“Visit Your Legislature Tourism Week” has a full programme, including expositions and exhibitions for careers in architecture, construction and tourism, as well as an art and visual day, and children’s fun tour.
Plus, the public, can by appointment, book a free tour, which will also be available beyond this week.
"We want to welcome people and say 'this is your legislature,' says Carmen Gopane, the spokesperson for the legislature.
“I think of all nine provincial legislatures, this legislature is the only one situated within a township. So that it is accessible. In line with Tourism Month, the decision was just to encourage more tourism and to start celebrating our significant, iconic buildings in our city.”
Gopane adds that another exciting development is also taking place. The Speaker, Newrene Klaaste, will on Monday, 12 September 2022, launch the legislature’s virtual tour, which will be available on their website to those who cannot visit the building in person.
According to the legislature’s website, the building is a true architectural reflection of the Northern Cape Province.
It reminds one of the dusty footpaths in Namaqualand, it is welcoming and it captures the spirit and aspirations of the people of the province by its unique, evocative family of forms and the interrelation of volumes and spaces.

Gopane further states that aside from the various career exhibitions, the children’s programme promises to be a highlight of the week.
“As the legislature we should be accessible to each and all. What is very special is the children. We want to take them on a tour ‘through the eyes of a child’ to experience the legislature.”
Those wishing to arrange a tour, are encouraged to make arrangements with the Public Education and Communication Unit, Visitors Programme Organiser: 053 839 8341/8064.
