Emergency services have again opened a section of the N1 at Bloemfontein, the N1 North and South between the R30 and Raymond Mhlaba Street, after it was closed due to a fire in the area.

Johan Breytenbach from the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association says this section of the N1 has been opened up, "traffic is moving freely in both directions".

The fire has since been brought under control, adds Free State Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Sipho Towa.

Earlier on Sunday, 4 September 2022, the section of the road was closed due to safety concerns after a fire broke out.

Towa said: "We have closed the N1 both North and Southbound for all vehicles until further notice. We have to ensure the safety of responders as well as road users."

All alternative access points onto N1 were also closed .

The Mangaung Fire Department was on scene and Working on Fire Bloemfontein team was activated, added Breytenbach.
