Free State school nears completion─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:51 Wed, 31 Aug 2022
Another Free State school is expected to open its doors to the public soon, as construction nears completion.
The Free State MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Motshidise Koloi, says her department has prioritised the completion of old projects that had been delayed for various reasons. This, after stating that she is pleased with the progress the newly appointed contractor has made at the Katleho Mpumelelo Secondary School in Sasolburg whilst she was delivering her budget speech for 2022/23 earlier this year. According to her, the school project is expected to be completed in 2023. She adds that over the last two fiscal years, the department has re-aligned project management processes and capacity to ensure better project delivery.

While delivering his budget speech, Education MEC Tate Makgoe said that in the current financial year, R360 million has been set aside to provide schools with additional facilities such as ablution facilities, grade R classes, nutrition centres, and laboratories.
Koloi further adds that the Katleho Mpumelelo Secondary School has ablution blocks, classrooms, a store, science lab, admin block, Grade R classes, and a hall. She says the school facility is also fire-safe, as a fire hydrant system was built in the design. Koloi explains that there is also a caterer’s flat, tuck shop, and showers included in the development of the school. She adds that the project has created jobs, skill development in the area, and opportunities for local businesses.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Ernest Mohlahlo, stated that he was impressed with the progress made at the Thusanong building and Tsiriletsong site following his visit on 30 August 2022. He says the project at the Tsiriletsong site is currently sitting at a combined 42% for phase 2 and 3, while phase 1 is already completed. He also says that at the prominent site, three local female contractors were included in the project through the department’s Contractor Development Programme (CDP). Koloi says the Thusanang building is currently sitting at 13% progress and is expected to be completed around this time next year.
