Bursary renamed after ANC stalwart─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:53 Wed, 01 Jun 2022
North West Premier Bushy Maape will on Wednesday launch the renaming of the provincial bursary to the name of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) stalwart, Victor Thebe Sifora.
According to a statement issued by the provincial government, the bursary is aimed at preserving the legacy of Sifora as an activist, scholar and struggle veteran.
Sifora - who was born in Mopyane Village in the then-Madikwe district in North West in 1914 - was one of the founding members of the ANCYL along with Oliver Thambo, Nelson Mandela, Anton Lembede and Walter Sisulu.
He was also a member of Seoposengwe, an official opposition party in then Bophuthatswana. The renaming will take place at the Mahikeng campus at the North West University.
The Provincial bursary scheme provides financial support to students with poor backgrounds, granting them opportunity to further their studies in different institutions of higher learning.
Maape is expected to be accompanied by members of the Executive Council, Heads of Departments, Administrators, the Mayor and other officials in North West. Dignitaries will also include members of the Sifora family and a delegation from North West University led by Potchefstroom Campus Deputy Vice Chancellor, Daryl Baila.
