A total of 4 879 low cost houses will be built for North West residents in 2022-2023 financial year.

This is according to the North West MEC for Human Settlements, Lenah Miga, during her recent budget vote speech.

Miga said that high number of units will be delivered in Ngaka Modiri Molema District as it accounts for 2 390 planned units, while Bojanala is the second region projected to be delivered followed by Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and Dr Kenneth Kaunda Districts respectively.

She further said that her department has planned to deliver 6 364 services sites in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and Bojanala Districts through the upgrading of informal settlements partnership grant. She said 17 000 sites have been projected for the next three years on internal services and housing across the province.

“For this financial year we are working more closely with the local government to ensure that there is a clear coordination of services and that we are delivering as required. We will make sure that we restore the dignity of our people and better their lives by providing dignified home for them.

"We will further ensure that they become the owners of those houses by providing title deeds for those houses. This is a clear indication that this is a caring government with great intentions to better the lives of our communities and grow the North West,” said Miga.

Miga added that 90 houses will be built for Military Veterans across the province, with 2 140 houses in rural areas - including those around mining towns of Madibeng, Rustenburg, Kgetleng Rivier, Matlosana and Moses Kotane.

She also said that her department spent 85% of its budget in the past financial year and her department has budget of R1 276712 000 from Human Settlement Grant and R379 342 000 for upgrading of Informal Settlement Development in the current financial year.
