Numsa calls for urgent intervention against bus company - VIDEO─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:17 Fri, 25 Feb 2022
Disgruntled members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) have taken steps towards addressing allegations of mistreatment of workers, which include allegations of sexual harassment at the North West Star Bus Company.
The spokesperson of Numsa, Phakamile Hlubi Majola, tells OFM News that the march to the National Department of Transport’s offices comes after North West Transport Investment’s (NTI) refusal to deal with allegations of sexual harassment that were lodged against management of the bus line company. According to her, this has created a fearful working environment for female workers who are constantly suppressed into demands of sexual favours from some members of line management.
“Our members are fed-up. There are various issues that we have raised with the Department of Transport, specifically issues around sexual harassment of employees. We’ve raised issues of corruption and mismanagement. This is a company that has actually been deducting money from employees for pension funds and medical aid. They have refused that they have not paid out directly or to the companies. This has resulted in very, very serious issues for workers,” said Majola.
She also adds that these selfish actions have led to some dire consequences for employees. Majola said that for the past 22 months, families of employees who passed away have been unable to receive any burial money from the fund and employer. She said that this is mainly due to the employer’s unlawful conduct.
