NW reservists hand over memorandum to Presidency | News Article

A group of disgruntled North West police reservists who took their battle against police management to the Union Building in Pretoria will have to wait at least 14 days before they will know their fate in the police service.

A group of 53 delegates from 5 districts in the province marched to the Union building in Pretoria in Gauteng to hand over a memorandum of grievance to officials in the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

These reservists say they demand justice, and that is to be employed permanently as police officers with no conditions attached after the fact.

A group of 600 reservists who render their services, worked for over 15 years for free without any prospects of employment.

OFM News previously reported that North West confirmed that these reservists have been rendering a voluntary service, without payment or benefits, according to the National Instruction 3 of 2014.

Their fight for permanent employment has gained traction with the EFF joining the calls for Minister Bheki Cele to hire them permanently.

The EFF’s Member of the National Assembly (MP), Kenny Motsamai, told OFM News that the party has joined the battle to offer support to the reservists. He said despite the criticism about the party joining the struggle of these reservists across five districts in the province, that it’s the right thing to do. Motsamai said it doesn’t make sense to train and arm the reservists for years and still deny them employment.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) recently announced that it will resume the organisation’s 2019/20 Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BLDP) intake.

Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said the training which had been scheduled to commence in March 2020 was suspended following a declaration of a National State of Disaster and nationwide lockdown by the President of the Republic of South Africa (RSA).
