NW municipality to elect new mayor─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:53 Wed, 29 Sep 2021

The Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Local Municipality will on Wednesday elect its new mayor - over a month after the death of former mayor, Maetu Kgaile, due to Covid-19 complications.
The ruling ANC’s Rose Thabanchu looks set to be elected into the position after her announcement as the mayoral candidate last week. The ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee’s coordinator, Hlomane Chauke, announced Thabanchu as the overall successful candidate after vigorous interviews by the ANC’s National Executive Committee.
Thabanchu contested the position with youth league leader Stella Mondale and Maria Ramphele. Thabanchu served as Speaker during the time when China Dodovu was the executive mayor.

Prior to that, she had just resigned as an educator at the Thuto Tsebo Secondary School in Kanana near Orkney, outside Klerksdorp.
The significance of the announcement is also in the spotlight as municipal councils are set to be disbanded due to Local General Elections set to be held on 1 November 2021.
