ANC yet to announce NW mayor-elect | News Article

The ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) is yet to announce the mayor-elect of the Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Local Municipality following the death of its former mayor.

Maetu Kgaile passed away in July 2021 due to Covid-19 complications. The NEC is interviewing three candidates proposed by the North West ANC's Interim Provincial Committee.

Two of the candidates are women - former speaker and teacher Rose Thabanchu and youth league leader Stella Mondlane - while the third person is yet to be confirmed.

Matlosana is amongst municipalities besieged by a lack of quality and basic service delivery and financial mismanagement. The municipality's political landscape on the side of the ruling party - which is the governing party in the municipality - is also on shaky grounds, given recent unrest which took place on Tuesday outside the ANC offices in Klerksdorp.

The former chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) in the North West Provincial Legislature, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, previously told OFM News that Matlosana and the JB Marks Municipality were once tipped as potential municipalities to be amalgamated to form the first metro municipality in the province.

But according to him things went south when these two municipalities failed to ensure that consequence management was implemented correctly and financial mismanagement started to raise its ugly head. This was also emphasised by the office of the Auditor-General in a recent audit report.

OFM News previously reported that the ANC chief whip, Khaya Ndincede, said the ruling party in the municipality takes note of the service delivery challenges and they acknowledge the challenges. Ndincede said that the municipality has serious challenges with potholes, illegal dumping, and sewerage issues.

“The reason we wanted to elect the mayor as soon as yesterday, is for us to consolidate the executive municipality so that we can be able to hold our administration accountable in terms of service delivery but we take note of those challenges, they are there but there is work to be done after that.

"There is also work that still needs to be done upon the election of the executive mayor, to address the issue of the potholes,” he added.
