Masilonyana mayoral position to be discussed─── 15:34 Mon, 10 May 2021
The Masilonyana Municipal Council is expected to discuss the matter of its ousted mayor Kunatu Stephen Koalane during a council sitting on Monday.
The municipality, which includes the towns of Theunissen and Winburg, has been facing protest action by community members the past couple of weeks.
According to community spokesperson, Tshepo Maredi, residents met on Sunday and concluded that they will let the council finalise the issue of the mayor and the outstanding matter of the municipal manager. Several attempts to get comments from the municipality was not fruitful.
Head of the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Mokete Duma, however, confirmed to OFM News that there were some concerns with regards to the reappointment of mayor Koalane. He said the department got a legal opinion that confirmed the re-appointment of the mayor was not in line with the Municipal Structures Act.
