Allegations against police, army concerns SAHRC─── MARVIN NTSANE 16:15 Tue, 31 Mar 2020
The SAHRC is concerned about video footage circulating on social media depicting members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and SAPS using force against people who fail to comply with lockdown regulations.
The spokesperson of SAHRC, Gushwell Brooks, says the fundamental human rights of everyone in South Africa, such as freedom and security, are also important - even under lockdown conditions.
Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that a 41-year-old man was shot and killed, while standing on his home’s veranda, during the Covid-19 lockdown enforcement in Vosloorus in Gauteng. Three children were also injured during the incident.
IPID has confirmed that an Ekurhuleni Metro Police official and a security guard were arrested for murder and attempted murder following the incident. Brooks urged the military and police to exercise tolerance and apply minimum force in the execution of their duties. He also calls on residents to adhere to the lockdown regulations.
