Anti-Gang Unit captures gang members─── 09:38 Fri, 20 Mar 2020

The SAPS Anti-Gang Unit in the NW has within a month of establishment by its Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, achieved significant success in its operation to shut down gang-related activities by arresting 31 suspects for various offences.
According to a statement by the Office of the Commissioner, since the beginning of February, the unit has managed to apprehend alleged gang members who have committed crimes against other gang members mostly in the community of Kanana in Orkney. The suspects have since appeared in the Orkney Magistrate’s Court and Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court respectively.
In one of the cases in Extension 12, Kanana, Ishmael Solly Setumi (34) was apprehended on2 February 2020 for an alleged murder committed on 1 February 2020. This was after the accused stabbed and killed Hansen Monnapule Mtukula, an alleged member of the Ghetto Ruff Gang. Setumi is believed to be a member of the Donyo Gang and is currently in custody and is expected to appear on Wednesday, 1 April 2020.
In another incident also in Kanana, four suspects who were reported to be members of the West Berry Gang, were arrested on 11 March 2020 for the alleged murder of Sello Ishmael Kutumel, who is an alleged member of the Money Lovers Gang. The victim was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of men on 19 February 2020. The accused, Mphati Dyantyana (19), Lefu Tambosch (24), Solomon Makae (23) and Nyakallo Tsoali (22), will reappear in the Orkney Magistrate’ Court on 20 April 2020.
Then, in an unrelated incident on 26 February 2020, in Extension 5, Kanana, four men allegedly gained entry into a house and threatened victims with knives. It is said that the suspects took household goods,including a home theatre system, amongst other items. During the incident, a 16-year-old was allegedly raped. Consequent to the incident, four accused were arrested for house robbery and rape. The accused remain in custody upon appearance on 23 March 2020.
The Anti-Gang Unit in fighting the fight against gangsterism arrested 22 more suspects in X section, Kanana and Tigane in Hartbeesfontein between 21 February 2020 and 14 March 2020 for separate cases of alleged house robbery, attempted rape, murder, and the possession of dangerous weapons. Reports suggest that some of the suspects are members of the Crazy Dogs gang of Kanana and the Hard Living Gang of Hartbeesfontein and have since appeared in the Orkney and Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court respectively.
The Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Sello Kwena has since commended members of the Anti-Gang Unit for their dedication.
