FS SAPS to reduce guns in SA─── MARVIN NTSANE 10:42 Wed, 18 Mar 2020

The firearm amnesty period continues and the police are asking community members to voluntarily take unwanted firearms to their nearest police stations.
The Free State police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, says they are not yet pleased with the turnout of returned firearms since the start of the period late last year. Covane says the last day is on 31 May 2020 and he further highlights that the aim is to create a gun-free country.
He urges anyone with unwanted, unlicensed, and illegal firearms, or parts of a firearm and ammunition, to use the opportunity and surrender it. He adds that a statement can be made during the return of the firearms to state how it may have ended up in your possession.
“The firearm will be taken to a forensic laboratory for testing and if it is found to have been involved in any crimes before, an investigation will be done. No compensation will be paid to persons for bringing the firearms.”
Covane added that people who want to apply for firearm licenses must have competency certificates. He adds that people with old firearm licenses that are green in color, must return them and they will receive the new white ones.
