Two arrested in abalone bust near Colesburg─── 08:23 Thu, 27 Feb 2020
The Hawks from both the Northern and Western Cape arrested two foreign nationals after boxes full of dried abalone were found in their possession.
Spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi says the Department of Agriculture, the Colesburg Visible Police unit and the local Criminal Record Centre joined in on the operation.
The suspects, aged 38 and 52, were travelling on the N1 between Cape Town and Gauteng when their truck was intercepted in the Northern Cape on Tuesday.
Mnisi says following a thorough search of the truck, police found 43 boxes of dried abalone weighing about 860 kg.
The value is approximately R7 million. The suspects will appear in court soon.
