Teenager among farm attackers | News Article

A teenager is among the culprits of the alarmingly increasing farm attacks currently plaguing Central South Africa.

It is alleged that the 19-year-old and a 26-year-old accomplice will appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court today. This follows a robbery and assault at a farmhouse near Wolmaransstad and Schweizer-Reneke in North West this past Sunday.

Following a search in the area, the suspects were arrested 6km from the crime scene on the same day. A shotgun, meat, cellular phone, luggage bag and an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be taken during the house robbery on the farm, were found. They are facing charges of house robbery, the possession of an unlicensed firearm and the possession of suspected stolen property.

Police spokesperson, Sam Tselanyane, says it is alleged that the duo pretended to be asking for water at the farm in the morning. Later they came back and attacked a 60-year-old farmworker with a wheel spanner and tied him.

Thereafter they proceeded into the farmhouse where they found the 92-year-old farm owner and demanded money and firearms. He was also tied up, while the house was ransacked. Meanwhile, the farmworker managed to untie himself and rushed to a neighbouring farm to seek help.

This follows after a Free State farmer, Mimie Jacobs, was brutally stabbed the day before in a farm attack that occurred on her farm Rosemead, just outside Bloemfontein. They then tied her up with an electric cable and forced her to make an e-wallet payment. No suspects were arrested.
