The MEC for Education in the province, Mmaphefo Matsemela, says she is shocked and saddened by this tragic death.. She says the teacher died after he suffered a serious heart attack on Saturday during a school trip to Vereeniging in Gauteng. 

She adds that the teacher had just gotten out of his car before he collapsed. 

Matsemela says other teachers managed to call emergency services, but unfortunately he was declared dead on the scene. 

“On the day of the incident the school had a sporting trip to Vereeniging to play rugby and hockey with other schools. Other teachers saw him when he fell and rushed to help him,” she adds. 

“They called the ambulance and his family. At the time of the incident, all learners were inside their buses preparing to leave for their sporting trip,” Matsemela further adds. 

She says all learners left and did not see the incident. 

Matsemela further highlighted that on Monday an Inclusive Education team will be sent to the school to conduct counselling for teachers, learners and the family of the deceased. 

The date of the memorial service and the funeral will be communicated in due course.
