Bfn couple arrested for assaulting medical student (19) | News Article

A Bloemfontein couple has been arrested and given a warning to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court following a road rage incident.

Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, says the couple is facing a charge of common assault after an incident involving a 19-year-old medical student of the Univerity of the Free State (UFS).

Covane says the couple, aged 36 and 48, will appear in court on 8 October 2019 for the alleged attack. He says the couple was arrested after the 19-year-old student, known to OFM News, approached the Park Road Police Station to open a case against the couple following an incident that happened Sunday at about 11:30. Covane says the victim was apparently on the way to fetch her brother from a church in Heuwelsig when the two pounced on her in Genl Dan Pienaar Road, Westdene.

In a video taken by the victim, the woman is seen getting out of her vehicle and walking towards the victim's car, which was stationary, and yelled at her in Afrikaans to drive. This has since caused an uproar on Twitter, with many condemning the couple and asking for the police and the South African Human Rights Commission to take appropriate action against the couple. This even led to the SAHRC urging the victim to approach offices of the commission in the province over the matter. In response to this, however, the commission’s spokesperson on the province, Thabang Kheswa, categorically stated that the matter is of a criminal nature and outside of their scope. "We have not received a complaint, anyway it’s a criminal case and the SAHRC does not have the mandate to investigate criminal cases,” he adds.
