Five suspects, aged between 19 and 31, have been arrested and are expected to appear in court for possession of illegal firearms and explosives in Hotazel, Northern Cape, police said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, said the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) received crime intelligence information about armed suspects driving a Toyota Quantum and planning to bomb an ATM at Hotazel on Wednesday morning at about 00:30 am.
“The information was operationalised and the said vehicle was spotted and pulled off. The TRT members approached the vehicle and the driver ran away while the remaining five male suspects were searched,” said Mooi.
The members confiscated explosive devices, three pistols, one of which was a toy, and gloves which were found in the suspects’ possession.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate's Court soon, Mooi said.
