Qwaqwa residents arrested after public violence─── 09:35 Thu, 01 Aug 2019
At least eight residents from Mandela Park in Qwaqwa in the Free State have been arrested after barricading roads with burning tyres and stones yesterday.
Residents accuse Ward 33 Councillor, Sonto Mlangeni, of not doing enough about the electricity supply problem they have been experiencing since January 2019. Residents yesterday threw stones at passing vehicles across Mandela Park shopping centre near Phuthaditjhaba.
Speaking to OFM News about this matter, Mlangeni says the challenges faced by her ward is up to her powers. She says the municipal administrator had promised to get all the necessary equipment from one of the companies based in Gauteng, but thus far there has not been any success.
Mlangeni had made the promise that the electricity supply problem will be attended to before the weekend. However, residents have crossed their fingers that they'll keep on fighting for the better services until their concerns are taken into consideration.
Furthermore, the Eastern Free State Police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, had earlier confirmed to OFM News that eight people have been arrested and charged with public violence.
