Users of social media have reacted with shock, anger, and sadness following the gruesome murder and mutilation of the 21-year-old college student, Naledi Lethoba, in Welkom in the Free State.
A 19-year-old college student, Obed Leshoro, has also since been arrested, appeared in court and remanded in custody for his alleged involvement in this gruesome murder.
Lethoba's horrifying murder has brought back again a fierce debate suggesting that men are trash, with many sharing the sentiments on Twitter and Facebook. These social media users lashed at the suspect saying the deceased did not deserve such a painful and senseless killing that has since left many reeling and many upset. Several people are also calling for serious action to be taken while sharing the deceased and the suspect’s pictures with a caption #JusticeForNaledi.
Lethoba's body was discovered by a passer-by last week in Welkom with a knife stuck in her neck, her lower body and face burnt, while her breasts were cut off.
Her body was discovered after the police received information about the body that was lying in an open field on May 19. She was identified by her parents last week Friday at the Welkom mortuary.
OFM News previously reported that following Leshoro’s brief appearance before the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Thursday 30 May 2019, police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng confirmed that he will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 14 June 2019 for a formal bail application. The motive for the gruesome murder remains unknown and investigations into the case continue. OFM News reported the 19-year-old student was arrested on May 28 after his parents handed him over to the police.
