Makgoe the most experienced MEC in FS, possibly the entire country─── 14:44 Mon, 27 May 2019
Having served in the provincial legislature since 1994, Tate Makgoe is once again standing a chance to be chosen as MEC after being elected as a member of the Free State Legislature last week.
Makgoe previously served as MEC in five portfolios in the Free State - Finance, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Agriculture, Public Safety and Security, and Finance - making him the longest-serving MEC in the province and possibly in the country.
Makgoe was appointed as MEC for Education in 2009, a position he has held ever since. In his tenure, he has taken the province to the number-one position with regards to matric results.
Provincial spokesperson, Tiisetso Makhele, says everyone who was elected to be a member of the legislature, qualifies to be elected as a member of the executive council.
He says they are not sure if Makgoe would be MEC again, as premier Sisi Ntombela is expected to announce her provincial executive council sometime this week.
If elected to serve as MEC again for the next five years, Makgoe would have spent 30 years as a member of the executive council when his term ends in 2024.
However, the ANC Youth league previously said they wanted their chairperson, Makalo Mohale to be the next MEC for Education.
League spokesperson, Sello Pieterson, told OFM News this afternoon that they don’t want to comment and will wait for the premier to make an announcement. They will only comment after that.
He said it is true that they want Mohale to get an MEC post but where the premier will place him is unknown to them.
