Residents in Mahikeng in the North West took to social media to express their frustrations about a main road that leads to the CBD from the Danville area that has been flooded for weeks.

A resident from the area, who asked not be named, told OFM News that the community now has to use an alternative route, which is a single carriageway and causes for scholars to be late every morning because a journey which normally took five minutes now takes up to 30 minutes. He further explained that the Mahikeng Local Municipality drained the water yesterday only after a local bus service transporting people got stuck, a second bus then got sent out to the rescue, but it too didn’t make it out. He explained that when problems are reported to the municipality they get sent from pillar to post and nothing is ever resolved.

The municipality’s acting communications manager, Yoliswa Tiro, told OFM News that the municipality is aware of the situation and that they have unblocked the drainage pipes that had clogged up following the heavy rains over the weekend. She explained that what causes the blockage is foreign items that were either thrown there or blown by the wind from the streets.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality would also like to appeal to residents not to throw litter in the stormwater drains as this causes blockages. Some of the items that were found when the pipes were being unblocked include foam plates and boxes.
