UFS Bloem campus closed again as protests continue─── 08:28 Thu, 22 Oct 2015
Bloemfontein - The Bloemfontein campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) has been closed again after students continued to protest despite the institution obtaining an urgent court interdict against them.
UFS spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says all staff and students at the Bloemfontein campus have been sent home after students began burning tyres as part of a national protest against fee increases for 2016. Loader says the Qwaqwa and South campuses are, however, open.
Yesterday the institution announced that it would be business as usual today at all three campuses of the university and that classes and services would resume as normal.
Students started protesting on Tuesday against fee increases. The Student Representative Council and university management met until late on Tuesday night over the proposed increases but could not reach an agreement. University students across the country are protesting, demanding a zero percent tuition increase. The protest began last week at Wits University.
