Kimberley - The state has expressed disbelief at some of the responses given by criminologist Eon Sonnekus during cross-examination in the Griekwastad murder trial sentencing proceedings currently underway in the Northern Cape High Court in Kimberley.
A 17-year-old minor was earlier this year found guilty of the murders of Deon, Christel and Marthella Steenkamp on their farm Naauwhoek in April 2012. The minor was also convicted of one count of rape and defeating the ends of justice.
State Advocate Hannes Cloete seemed utterly taken aback by certain of Sonnekus’s answers this morning. At one stage he asked Sonnekus if he was serious and if he honestly felt comfortable with having a specific response placed on the record.

Cloete earlier focussed on a text conversation between the accused and a girl, trying to discredit the gentlemanly behaviour the court heard about yesterday. He also focussed on incidents reported by Grey College teacher John Dykman, asking Sonnekus why he ignored those incidents in compiling his report.
Cloete said he will later put it to the court that the minor is a liar and is continuing to lie to protect his own interest.
