Bloemfontein - A gang rape survivor said today that South Africa is at war in trying to fight the scourge of violence against women and children.
Andy Kawa, who was gang raped in 2010, was speaking at a march against the abuse of women and children at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein campus.
Kawa, a business woman and social entrepreneur, heads the organisation Kwanele, which encourages victims of gender-based violence to come forward. She says more rapes occur in South Africa than there are deaths in the Syrian Civil War.
She said about 50 000 people die in Syria annually, compared to over a 1.5 million rape cases in South Africa, whether reported or not.
