A 38-year-old man in the Free State was convicted and sentenced on charges of contravening the Tax Administration Act.
This follows after Mayisewa Makhubo appeared before the Frankfort Regional Court for fraud.
According to the Hawks' spokesperson in the Free State, Christopher Singo, a preliminary probe by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) uncovered that Makhubo’s fraudulent activities amounted to more than R1 million.
The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Bloemfontein for further investigation. Makhubo was served a court summons on 18 October 2019. He appeared in court on several occasions.
The incident took place between 2016 and 2019.
"The court sentenced Makhubo to four (4) years direct imprisonment," says Singo.
