Over 4000 #GBV cases reported across NW─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:56 Thu, 25 Feb 2021
More than 4000 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) were reported across North West in 2020.
This is according to premier Job Mokgoro during his state of the province address (SOPA) at the Provincial Legislature in Mmabatho near Mahikeng. He says the victims of GBV were provided with accommodation, basic counselling, court preparation services and psychosocial support.
During his speech, he indicated that in November last year, a White Door Crisis Centre was launched in the Ratlou Local Municipality, which include Madibogo. Mokgoro says this crisis centre was to serve as a first-stop for gender-based violence victims.
Recently, the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, released the South African crime statistics in which the data showed that 193 murders recorded from October to December 2020 were a result of domestic violence. Minister Cele also said 12,218 people were raped between October and December last year.
In 2020, Mokgoro announced that the high rate of GBV cases in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, which includes Mahikeng, was a cause of concern.
Since the start of the national lockdown due to the coronavirus, OFM News reported on several murders of women in the province, which include the murders of the police officer, Martha Bouwer, and a young teacher, Khumontle Mokgosi, who were both found murdered in two separate incidents.
