The Olive Tree is a specialised school and therapy centre in Potchefstroom, South Africa, catering for the specific and individual needs of learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The Olive Tree school was inspired by a family with daughter who has ASD. With no school or facility catering for these children they identified the need to establish such a place and in turn to help others in a similar situation.
As a non-profit organisation, we rely on the support of the local and international community to help us give these children and their families what they need - a happy and safe space with quality support, training and programmes, that will
allow them to grow in confidence and maximise their skills and potential.
With your support we can fulfil these needs and continue to grow our little school, make a difference and contribute to the community.

History
The class was established by Werner Hamman (Pieter Hamman’s father), Alida Jacobs (Occupational Therapist) and Sancea Jacobs (Teacher) after the Hamman family lost Pieter in a car accident, the accident happened while Ms Hamman was pregnant with Lindie. As a result of the accident Lindie was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The Hammans did not want to send Lindie away to attend school where she would have to stay in a hostel, and they also realized there was a big demand for a special needs class in the Hartswater area.
The Pieter Hamman Class was opened in February 2012 in an old unused bathroom at Hartswater Primary School with only 3 learners.
In the last 11 years the number of learners increased to 20, with 2 teachers, a class assistant, and a cleaner/cook. During this time, we have expanded into two classrooms.
One class is for learners with severe intellectual delays which include learners on the Autism Spectrum, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida and Down Syndrome. Our teachers engulf them in love, care and teach them how to communicate while teaching them basic life skills.
The second Class is more a skilled based class which focus on Life skills, Food Processing, Computer skills and being independent. These learners also stay with us for years and we teach them to be as independent as possible.
Currently we have 16 learners on the waiting list, but we unfortunately don’t have space or resources to accommodate them.
