Liverpool claim 20th league title in fine style─── MORGAN PIEK 07:44 Mon, 28 Apr 2025

Liverpool secured their 20th top-flight English league title – and their second in the Premier League era– on Sunday with a commanding 5–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
This triumph not only equalled Manchester United’s record for the most English league titles but also marked a historic achievement for new manager Arne Slot.
Slot became the first Dutchman to win the English league and one of only ten managers to do so in their debut season. Slot’s success was built on tactical evolution rather than a complete overhaul. He kept much of Jürgen Klopp’s squad intact but introduced strategic tweaks, such as repositioning Dominik Szoboszlai and pairing Ibrahima Konaté with Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

These changes led to a dominant campaign, with Liverpool finishing 15 points clear of their nearest rivals. The title-clinching match was a spectacle, with goals from Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and an own goal by Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie. The atmosphere at Anfield was electric, as fans celebrated a title they could finally witness in person– unlike the 2019–20 season, when pandemic restrictions muted the celebrations.
Captain Virgil van Dijk described the achievement as “truly deserved”, highlighting the team’s consistency and the collective effort of players, staff, and supporters. “It is amazing, it is amazing what today was. Obviously there were a lot of emotions before the game and throughout the whole week, but we got the job done.

“We are truly deserving champions of England – the most beautiful club in the world– and I think we deserve all of this. The lads should enjoy the next couple of weeks” Slot acknowledged the strong foundation left by Klopp and assistant Pepijn Lijnders, crediting their culture and quality for helping to facilitate a seamless transition.”
"For the whole season we were on top of the league, but you also know how hard the Premier League is,” said Slot. “The belief for us to win it was here throughout the season.“It is difficult to put into words –you can feel how important it was for the fans to be here. We always come back; we always find a way to win. I don’t think we could have lost today. Our main focus was to win this game. If you are part of it, you still feel the pressure of getting the points over the line.”
This victory also signalled a promising new era under Slot’s leadership. With smart recruitment and strategic management, Liverpool looks well positioned to maintain their competitiveness in the seasons ahead. However, Slot’s real test as Liverpool manager starts now, as he begins putting his own stamp on the club.
