Liverpool moved back to the top of the English Premiership table less than a week after surrendering their lead to the defending champion, Manchester City.
Last week Sunday the Reds dropped a point in London after playing to a 2-2 draw to Arsenal at the Emirates after twice coming from behind to draw level.
The draw saw City take a one-point lead at the summit, however, this was short-lived after some very interesting results on Saturday.
The Citizens were stunned by a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, and this gave a gap for Liverpool to pounce. Arsenal suffered their first defeat since May after they lost 1-0 to Newcastle at St James’ Park courtesy of a 12th minute Alexander Isak goal.

Liverpool still had a lot of work to do to move to the top again and Brighton & Hove Albion didn’t make it easy. The Seagulls opened the scoring at Anfield when Ferdi Kadioglu found the back of the net in the 14th minute. They held onto the lead till the 70th minute in the Merseyside fixture before the Dutch international Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool.
Just two minutes later the winning goal was scored by none other than Mo Salah to ensure the three points and move two clear of City. The Liverpool boss, Arne Slot, said they can always bank on their home support when the pressure is on.
“The crowd was incredible in the second half, our fans were incredible the second half,” said Slot who extends his fine start at the Liverpool manager.
“Our players too, but our fans as well. It was the loudest crowd since I’ve been here. Let’s go now for Tuesday, when I think we need them again.
“To make sure we play like this from the start and the fans can help us from the start, because that definitely has an influence on our players and in the end on our results.”
Elsewhere, the former two-time European champions Nottingham Forest claimed a stunning 3-0 win against West Ham, who themselves beat Manchester 2-1 six days earlier. This result saw Forest shoot up the table into third.
Ipswich and Leinster City played to a 1-1 draw, while Southampton beat Everton 1-0 at St Mary's, and Wolverhampton played to a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at the Molineux.
On Sunday at 16:00 Tottenham Hotspur will face Aston Villa in London, while at 18:30 the pressure will be on Manchester United as they host Chelsea at Old Trafford.
