Community Work Programme (CWP) employees on Monday threatened to vandalise the African National Congress's (ANC) headquarters, Luthuli House, unless the party heeded their demands for better employment conditions.

Hundreds of workers wearing orange work suits marched to ANC headquarters on Monday demanding answers. They have previously handed over a memorandum to the ANC's spokesman.

CWP spokesperson Velaph Ndaba said: “We are going to vandalise Luthuli House next time we come here, since the ANC has failed us”.

“We gave them two weeks to respond to our memorandum of demands but they don't take us seriously, it has been a month now and they committed themselves last time we were here that they will give us feedback within two weeks.”

The protestors have handed a memorandum handed to ANC spokesman Dakota Legoete, who promised to revert to them within two weeks. They demanded sick leave, maternity leave and that their stipend be increased from R780 to R1000 a month.

Workers from North West added that they were not being taken seriously. “We are sacrificing our time to serve the community and keep it clean but they are paying us peanuts. What can we do with that R780 they are paying us, we have families to feed, bills  and school fees to pay”.

“We are not even safe because they don’t give us full uniforms.”

They added that they were saying enough its enough, and they were tired of being slaves.
