Ramaphosaville evictions temporarily suspended─── 17:29 Wed, 24 Apr 2019
Residents of Ramaphosaville informal settlement, will for now continue residing on their shacks, after forced evictions have been temporarily suspended.
This was the agreement reached between the South African Human rights commission (SAHRC), the Emfuleni local municipality, the affected residents and other stakeholders, and follows protests last month in informal settlements in Rustervaal Vereeniging.
The municipality obtained a court order to evict those who had built shacks on the land, which is dolomitic and not habitable. This evictions led to brutal clashes between the Red Ants and the land invaders in the area - which left two people dead.
SAHRC Gauteng manager Buang Jones told Ofm News that the municipality agreed to allow the invaders to stay on the land in question, as all stakeholders are trying to find an amicable solution to this problem.
However Jones did not provide information as to where the invaders came from, or if the two people who died during clashes were buried.
