Booi set for 50th Springbok cap─── MORGAN PIEK 08:07 Fri, 18 Apr 2025

Nolusindiso Booi stands on the verge of a major milestone – earning her 50th Test cap for the Springbok Women. But as the team prepares to face Spain in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, the captain’s focus remains firmly on the team.
For Booi, the phrase “there’s no ‘I’ in team” is more than words. It’s a principle that has guided her since her debut back in 2010 at the age of 24. Fourteen years later, that mindset hasn’t changed.
“I’m feeling a mix of nerves and excitement – but in a good way,” Booi said from Alicante, Spain, on Thursday. “The goal is to start the season well. This match will show us how far we’ve come and what we still need to work on as we build towards the World Cup.”
She sees Saturday’s game as a turning point. “This is the start, and from here, there’s no looking back. The reality of the World Cup will really hit after this match.”
When asked about her 50th cap, Booi was quick to steer the conversation back to the team. “Yes, it’s a special milestone, but that’s not where my attention is. My focus is on the team and doing what’s needed.”
Still, she acknowledged the occasion. “It’s an honour to reach 50 caps, but representing my team and country means even more. I just want to enjoy the game and play my part – for myself and the team.”
Spain is a familiar opponent for Booi. Of her 49 caps, more have been against Spain than any other side, with the two nations meeting five times in recent years. That familiarity gives her valuable insight.
“All 23 of us know the physical side is non-negotiable, but the forwards have a clear role to play,” she said with a smile. “We’ve got plans in place, and yes, they rely heavily on the pack.”
She also praised the relationship between the two teams. “We’ve both benefited from playing each other regularly. Spain don’t compete in the Six Nations, so like us, they look for strong opposition to improve. This match will mean a lot to both sides heading into the World Cup.”
While much of the spotlight will be on Booi, Saturday will also mark a proud moment for Alicia Willemse, who is set to make her Test debut off the bench.

Willemse toured with the team last year but didn’t make the match-day squad. Now, after also earning her first cap for the Springbok Women’s Sevens, she’s ready to step onto the Test stage.
“I’m thrilled for Alicia,” Booi said. “I told her to play hard and without fear—those are the traits that keep you in this environment. But above all, enjoy every second.”
The match, originally set for Elche, will now be played at Bonalba Resort Rugby Field near Alicante, according to the Spanish Rugby Federation.
