Blitzboks finished ninth overall in Singapore─── MORGAN PIEK 15:55 Sun, 06 Apr 2025

The Blitzboks concluded the league phase of the Sevens World Series season in fourth place after a mixed showing in Singapore.
Despite finishing strong with two wins on Sunday, the Blitzboks were only able to secure ninth place for the tournament. Head coach Philip Snyman expressed frustration over the team’s inconsistency, which has been a recurring issue throughout the season.
In Singapore, South Africa managed to win three out of four matches. Their Sunday victories – 14-12 against the USA and a commanding 26-7 over Australia – were particularly commendable given they had only nine players available.
However, a heavy loss in their opening pool match against Great Britain, compounded by discipline issues and multiple cards, severely impacted their overall standing. Snyman described the weekend as “bittersweet”, acknowledging the resilience his players showed in the final three games, especially after their initial setback.

Snyman was especially proud of the team’s fightback after the disappointing start. He highlighted their close match against league winners Argentina, which showed the squad’s potential. However, he emphasised the need to improve discipline and maintain consistent performances to compete among the top teams.
The coach acknowledged the team’s progress compared to the previous season, noting victories against Argentina and appearances in two finals as signs of improvement. Yet, their shortcomings during the Asian leg – including inconsistent execution and fluctuating intensity – revealed areas that still require attention.

Snyman pointed out that the team has set high standards and aims to be among the world’s best, not only by winning games but by developing future talent with the 2028 Olympics in mind. Young players like Zander Reynders and Gino Cupido have shown promise, with Reynders in particular growing into a leadership role.
In conclusion, while South Africa’s performance in Singapore and throughout the season showed moments of brilliance, their lack of consistency has kept them from securing a top-three finish.
With the Grand Finale in Los Angeles approaching, the Blitzboks will need to address these issues – especially discipline and execution under pressure – to fully realise their potential. Snyman remains optimistic about the squad’s direction and believes that with continued hard work and a mental shift, the team can establish itself among the global elite.
