Griquas may soon boast with new Bester brothers─── MORGAN PIEK 16:40 Thu, 03 Apr 2025

The Central University of Technology Ixias winger, Zachery Bester, has reported for duty at the Suzuki Griquas in Kimberley, seizing the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a professional rugby player.
Bester is currently training with the Peacock Blues on a trial basis, and at this stage, there have been no discussions about a contract. He was invited to Kimberley by head coach Pieter Bergh, who has a keen eye for talent emerging from the Varsity Cup.
He could follow in the footsteps of his brother, Zane, who joined the Griquas from the University of the Free State Shimlas last year after the Varsity Cup. Zane has since become a regular in the team. He is well aware that a contract will not fall into his lap, and it is something that he will need to earn.

Both brothers certainly possess the X-factor, and if they manage to realise their dream of playing together professionally, they will be the latest “Bester Brothers” to represent the Griquas.
In the 1990s, the team had another set of Bester brothers – the late Piet Bester (prop) and his brother André (hooker) – who were known for their toughness. In contrast, Zane and Zachery bring speed and flair as their strengths.
Zachery told OFM Sport that this opportunity is massive, and he is determined to make it count. “Training here at the Griquas is amazing. I'm really excited about what's ahead,” said Bester.
“That being said, nothing is guaranteed – there’s still a lot of work to be done. I need to impress, I need to show that I belong here and that I have what it takes.
“I just want to thank Pieter for giving me this chance – it’s a great opportunity, and I’m going to make the most of it.
“I’m also grateful to all my former coaches and staff who have helped me get to this point. Pieter is an up-and-coming coach making a big impact in rugby, and I appreciate this opportunity.

“What can I say? Being a professional rugby player is a short-lived career, so I just want to make the most of it and see where this journey takes me.”
Should Zachery get a contract, he will become the latest Ixias player to join the Griquas and will follow in the footsteps of Janu Botha, Derik Pretorius, Eddie Davids, Xavier Swartbooi, and Tylor Sefoor, who are all current squad members. Davids will be playing in his 50th game for the Griquas on Saturday when they face the Boland Cavaliers in round five of the SA Cup.
Saturday’s game between the Griquas and Boland at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley kicks off at 14:00.
