The Springboks Sevens team have opted for experience as they gear up for the season-opening Dubai Sevens in the United Arab Emirates.

Despite a challenging SVNS World Series campaign last season, the Blitzboks enter the tournament as defending champions and are determined to start the new season on a high.

Blitzboks coach Philip Snyman has named a ten-man squad for the Dubai Sevens, a tournament that has historically been a favourite for South Africa.

However, their path to success won’t be easy, as they face a tough Pool draw alongside Olympic champions France, Australia, and Kenya. South Africa will look to start strong as they aim to defend their title and set the tone for the season ahead.

For the former Cheetahs winger, Snyman, this season represents a fresh start with new goals and strategies. “The guys really worked hard and made it difficult for me to select the final group,” he said.

“Players such as Mfundo Ndhlovu and Shaun Williams, who returned from injuries just a week ago, pushed hard for selection. Another week of preparation might have changed my mind, but I am happy with the final group, their attitude, and the experience they bring.”

Snyman further emphasised the balance of senior players and emerging talents in the squad, and they draw inspiration from how well Rassie Erasmus has managed with the back-to-back Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks.

“We have a good core of senior players and some exciting youngsters who always bring energy to the group. Part of our plan is to introduce new players throughout the season to build depth, something the Springboks have done successfully, and we want to replicate that.”

Looking ahead to the season, Snyman highlighted a focus on refining both attack and defence. “We want to play a wider game and improve our defensive strategies to create more turnover opportunities. Consistency is key for us, and our goal is to finish in the top four of every tournament.”

‘We focussed on ourselves and what we want to achieve this season’

Preparation for the Dubai Sevens has so far focussed on the team’s overall objectives rather than specific opponents. “We’re now diving into the details of our matches, but the last few weeks have been about focusing on ourselves and what we want to achieve this season,” Snyman added.

The 2024 Dubai Sevens kicks off next week Saturday, with the Blitzboks opening their campaign against Australia at 8:50 am.
