Varsity Cup

The North West University Pukke will be playing in their first home game of the 2019 Varsity Cup on Monday night when they tackle the University of Western Cape in Potchefstroom.

Pukke will want to continue their good form in the competition, following a first-round win against the University of Johannesburg, albeit this game didn’t last the full 80 minutes due to lightning on the Highveld.

Momentum is somewhat of a concern for the Pukke, as they enjoyed a second-round bye, and the coach, Jonathan Mokuena, tells OFM Sport that he is sure that the home ground support will help.

“The break was a bit of a momentum-stopper for us, but I guess at the end of the day it is one of those things that you cannot control, and you must accept it for what it is.

“For us, it's just about focusing on what we’ve got to do. A home game always gives you that little bit of extra energy and extra focus.

“So, that tackle you would have made in the 60th minute, you’ll be making in the 80th minute as well.”

The UWC has lost both of their games to the UCT Ikeys and the UFS Shimlas thus far, however, Mo Mokuena warns that the side from Bellville will be no walkover on Monday evening.

“UWC will definitely be better, as we see that they are improving every week.

“Even though they’ve lost two games, they are slowly but surely starting to find their feet.

“With guys like Chester Williams and Bolla Conradie they will come up with a few plans to up us under pressure.

“As I said earlier, we’ve just got to focus on what we need to do, and the rest will fall in place.

“There will be four sets on twenty minutes, and hopefully, the result will go our way.”

Monday evening's game at the Fanie du Toit Sportsgrounds kicks off at 18:30.
