The 2018 Currie Cup gets underway on Friday afternoon when the Griquas face the Pumas in what will be a rematch of last months SuperSport Rugby Challenge final.

Revenge will be on the minds of the Kimberley based side after surrendering the Rugby Challenge title to the Pumas in the dying seconds of the game last month.

They will however have 1, and 1 opportunity only, to take their revenge as this year's Currie Cup will be decided over a single round of round robin fixtures rather than the traditional home and away fixture against each side in the tournament.

The new format of 3 home and 3 away fixtures holds its own positives and negatives but according to Peacock Blues coach Peter Engeldow, a format such as this could play to their advantage.

"The single round is quite appealing. The history I've had in the competition, generally we start off quite well but struggle towards the end."

"The single round makes it quite exciting, its also a bit easier to keep the guys motivated and to keep fighting. If you have a couple of wins, anything can happen," Engeldow added.

The Griquas will travel to Mbombela where they lock horns with the Pumas at 17:00 on Friday.

That match is followed by the weekends only other Currie Cup fixture when the Free State Cheetahs and the Blue Bulls clash in Bloemfontein at 19:00.
